Location

Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, located off the coast of Australia. It is set between New Zealand and New Caledonia.

Flag

The flag of the Norfolk Islands was approved by the Norfolk Island Council on 6 June 1979. The flag became official on 17 January 1980. The flag is composed of three vertical stripes of green, white & green colors with a large green Norfolk Island pine tree centered in the white stripe. The green color represents the rich vegetation on the island, and the pine tree—endemic to the island – is a symbol of Norfolk Island.

  • The flag of the Norfolk Islands is similar to the flag of Canada with its use of only two colors and depiction of a prominent local floral symbol in the central white band.
  • Also, the flag is similar in color to Nigeria’s green and white triband.

Language

The official languages in the Norfolk Islands are English, and a creole language is known as Norfuk (a mixture of 18th-century English and ancient Tahitian).

 

Religion

The majority of the population is Christian. Protestants account for 46.8%, including Anglican 29.2%, Uniting Church in Australia 9.8%, Presbyterian 2.9%, Seventh-day Adventist 2.7%, and other 2.2%. Other minorities of Christianity, like Roman Catholics, account for 12.6%, other Christian groups for 2.9%, and other religions for 1.4%.

Climate

In Norfolk Island, the climate is subtropical and oceanic. The weather is moderate most of the year, with frequent rain and wind. In January and February (in Summer), the temperature is around 25 °C (77 °F) during the day and about 19/20 °C (66/68 °F) at night; the highest recorded temperatures are around 30 °C (86 °F). In July and August (in winter), highs are around 18 °C (64 °F) and lows around 13 °C (55 °F). The best time to visit Norfolk Island runs from October to March when the rains are less heavy, the sunshine is more frequent, and the temperature is pleasant.
