Reasons For Naming the Country

Fijians first impressed themselves on European consciousness through the writings of the members of Cook’s expeditions who met them in Tonga. They were described as formidable warriors and ferocious cannibals, builders of the finest vessels in the Pacific, but not great sailors. They inspired awe amongst the Tongans, and all their manufactures, especially bark cloth and clubs, were highly valued and much in demand.
They called their home Viti, but the Tongans called it Fisi, and it was by this foreign pronunciation, Fiji, first promulgated by Captain James Cook, that these islands are now known.

Flag

The flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, 1970. The flag of Fiji consists of a bright blue background with the Union Jack (flag of the UK) on the upper side and the Fijian shield centered on the other half of the flag. The bright blue symbolizes the Pacific Ocean; the Union Jack reflects the country’s links with the United Kingdom; the shield is derived from the country’s coat of arms; the yellow lion symbolizes strength and courage; stalks of sugarcane, palm trees, and bananas represent Fiji’s agricultural and natural resources; and the white dove stands for purity and peace.

Language

English is the official language of Fiji, although the whole population speaks either Fijian or Fijian Hindi.
