Country Name

Azerbaijan, or the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Location

Azerbaijan is located at the crossroads between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.

Capital

Baku.

Reasons For Naming

The words “Azer” mean “fire” in Persian, and “baijan” means “home.”. The name “Azerbaijan” is derived from the active volcanoes in the country, which have been described as a “land of fire” in historical books.
It was also said to be named after an Iranian city (which explains why the designation of Azerbaijan was chosen to deprive Iran of a cultural and historical center), which was translated to “Adarbakan.”.

Flag

The flag of Azerbaijan was adopted on February 5, 1991. The flag consists of three horizontal lines from the top: blue, red, and green, and the crescent and the star are eight limbs in the middle of the red line. Blue represents “Turkish people,”  red” refers to progress,”  and green refers to “Islam.”. The crescent and the star are symbols of Islam, and the eight stars represent the eight branches of the Turkish people, the population races of the state.

Language

The official language is Azerbaijani, which belongs to the Turkish language family. Russian and English are important second and third languages for education and communication.
There are dozens of other languages used in the country, such as Armenian, Georgian, and other languages spoken by minorities.

Religion

Azerbaijan is an Islamic country, with 95% of the population being Muslims and the rest being Christians.
The Shiites in Azerbaijan make up the majority of Muslims, or 70% of the population, while the remaining 25% are Hanafis and Shafa’is.

Climate

In Azerbaijan, the climate is slightly continental, with relatively cold winters and hot summers; it is also dry in most of the low-lying areas, while it is colder and generally rainier in the mountains.
The coast of the Caspian Sea is semi-arid in the northern part and arid in the center, while it is rainy in the southernmost stretch, which is, therefore, an exception to the rule that the plains of Azerbaijan are arid.
Winter in Azerbaijan is cold but not freezing, at least in the plains. The Caucasus Mountain Range partially protects the country’s interior from Russian cold air outbreaks, while the cold wind blows strongly along the coast but is tempered by the Caspian Sea. In winter, however, there may be some light snowfalls and frosts along the coast, particularly in inland areas where cold air can stagnate more easily after the wind has died down.
Summer is hot and sunny, with some afternoon thunderstorms in inland areas.
The best times to visit Azerbaijan are in the spring and autumn, particularly in May and October, though it rains heavily in the southern city of Lenkoran during October. September is usually a pleasant month in Baku and the rest of the territory, though the exclave of Nakhchivan can still be hot.
